Does green tea really aid natural weight loss?
Green tea is thought to be one of the most healthiest drinks around today, and has definite health benefits. The question is whether it is really good for weight loss?
We must be aware that there are some side effects associated with drinking green tea that must be factored in against the many health benefits.
Green tea is safe for adults when consumed in moderation
Green tea extract can be regarded as generally safe for most people when taken orally or applied topically on skin for a brief time period.
However, there are some reports that drinking too much green tea (more than 5 cups per day) can have side effects on some people.
Individuals that have a natural low tolerance for caffeine may endure these symptoms:
- High blood pressure
- Stomach problems
- Mild to serious headaches
- Sleep problems, nervousness and anxiety
- Irregular or accelerated heart problems
You might be suffering from issues that may be exacerbated with green tea ingestion. If that were the case you should restrict green tea intake to only two cups every day.
More research needs to be done into these areas, but it is worth noting that green tea has been linked with these symptoms.
However, we are all individuals and there is no guarantee that you will react in this way.
Health benefits of green tea
Green tea has been thought to be first introduced into Japan at 805 BC. It has been enjoyed as a cultural staple and health elixir from the East for at least 5,000 years.
Green tea made its way to the West when European investors visited East Asia from the 16th century. Green tea eventually made its way to the west in the 16th century.
What is that makes green tea so healthy?
Green tea is high in antioxadants known as polyphenols, which contain Catechins. Green tea can be considered an anti-aging product due to the high amount of antioxidants they contain.
Antioxidants are known to fight the damage in the body caused by free radicals, which play a crucial part of the aging process.
They are known to change are DNA, cells and can even kill cells in our body, which is why they can be associated with many medical problems.
Catechins may be able to block cholesterol absorption and boost the excretion of all cholesterol-containing bile salts.
Is green tea effective for fat burning?
The simple answer is yes and no. Let me explain.
To see a significant increase in your metabolism to cause a fat burning effect you are likely going to need to take it in its supplement form.
The main fat burning compound in green tea is called EGCG, and you would need to drink more then 5 cups of green tea a day for it to be effective.
As mentioned earlier this amount of green tea could be bad for your health, which is why supplements would be better.
A normal cup of green tea contains 50mg of EGCG, and you would need to take between 400-500mg a day for significant fat burning.
Will EGCG help everyone lose weight?
The short answer is no……
If you have been drinking coffee or tea daily for many years then you are likely to have built up a tolerance to caffeine, which will mean that you are unlikely to see any benefits.
If you are someone that does not drink a lot caffeine than this supplement could be good for you. However, don’t get your hopes up because the results are not staggering.
Some studies have shown only a 4% increase in metabolism during EGCG use.
The effects of caffeine on weight loss
Green tea also contains caffeine, which has been shown to suppress appetite and aid in fat burning. Green tea and caffeine work together to boost your metabolism.
However, the amount of caffeine in green tea is minimal compared to black tea or coffee:
- Herbal tea 0mg
- Decaf coffee 3-18mg
- Decaf tea 8-20mg
- White tea 6-75mg
- Green tea 12-75mg
- Oolong tea 50-75mg
- Black tea 40-120mg
- Coffee 80-200mg
This means that to get sufficient amounts of caffeine to have a significant effect on weight loss you would have to be drinking 3-5 cups a day.
Is green tea great for weight loss?
I would have to conclude that green tea in the form of a beverage isn’t going to help you lose a significant amount of weight.
However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t drink it if you are tying to lose weight.
As mentioned before it has many health benefits, it is lower in calories than a coffee of white tea and should be part of your weight loss efforts.
When you are trying to lose weight, you have to combine different elements to make sure your metabolism, digestion and hormones are working optimally. Green tea can help with this.
If you decide to go with green tea supplements take 400-500mg of EGCG daily. If you can try to divide this amount into 3 servings.
Also, try to combine this with 200mg of caffeine to get the benefits of the combination of caffeine and EGCG.
